The Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) is a specialized branch of the Indian Armed Forces that provides medical care to personnel in the Army, Navy, and Air Force, as well as their families. It plays a crucial role in maintaining the health and well-being of military members, ensuring they are fit for duty in all conditions.
Who Can Join?
- Medical Graduates: Individuals who have completed their MBBS or equivalent degree from a recognized medical college.
- Postgraduates: Those with postgraduate degrees in medical fields, such as MD, MS, or DNB.
- BDS/MDS Graduates: Dental graduates can also apply for dental officer posts in AFMS.
- Short Service Commission (SSC) Candidates: Available for doctors willing to serve on a contractual basis for 5 years, extendable up to 14 years.
- Permanent Commission (PC) Candidates: Available for male and female doctors below the age of 30 (MBBS) or 35 (postgraduates).
Types of Entries
- Medical Cadet Entry: For MBBS students pursuing their degree at the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune. Students are commissioned as officers upon graduation.
- SSC for Doctors: Doctors can join as Short Service Commissioned Officers through an entry exam and interview conducted by the Armed Forces.
- Direct Permanent Commission (PC): For specialists and super-specialists in various medical fields, available to doctors below a certain age.
- Dental Officer Entry: Available for dental graduates and postgraduates to join as commissioned officers.
- Nursing Officers Entry: Nurses with a recognized degree and work experience can apply to serve in the military hospitals.
How Many Notifications Per Year?
- Generally, two to three notifications are released annually for different positions, such as SSC medical officer recruitment, dental officer recruitment, and AFMC cadet selection.
- Notifications are typically published on the official Armed Forces Medical Services website and other government job portals.
Salary
- Basic Pay: The initial salary for a medical officer can range from INR 75,000 to INR 90,000 per month.
- Additional Allowances: Includes military service pay, high altitude allowance, house rent allowance, travel allowance, and non-practicing allowance, potentially increasing the total pay package significantly.
- Promotions: With promotions, the pay can increase, reaching INR 2,50,000 per month or more for higher-ranking officers.
Qualification
- For Medical Cadets: Must have passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology with a minimum of 60% aggregate.
- For Doctors: Should have an MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution and be registered with the Medical Council of India (MCI) or State Medical Council.
- For Specialists: Requires a postgraduate medical degree (MD/MS/DNB) from a recognized institution.
- For Nursing Officers: A B.Sc. (Nursing) degree with work experience in a recognized hospital.
